Common Conditions Causing Shoulder Pain

Three main bones make up your shoulder: the collarbone (clavicle), the shoulder blade (scapula), and the upper arm bone (humerus). These bones are held together via an intricate connection of ligaments, muscles, tendons, and other tissues. A disruption in the normal function, integrity, and/or alignment of any of these tissues can lead to a painful and debilitating condition including:

  • Bursitis: irritation and inflammation of a fluid-filled sac near the shoulder
  • Tendonitis: inflammation and irritation of a tendon
  • Rotator cuff strain or tear: damage to any of the small stabilizing muscles
  • Labrum tear: damage to the cushioning labrum inside the shoulder joint
  • Adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder): progressive loss of range of motion
  • Osteoarthritis: wearing down of the cushioning cartilage within the joint
  • Instability: hypermobility and/or complete joint dislocation

Risk Factors for Shoulder Pain

Our wellness team can help you tease out individual factors which may be contributing to your dysfunction. Common factors we see include:

  • Poor posture
  • Overuse
  • Repetitive overhead motion
  • Sports accident
  • Auto accident
  • Personal injury (e.g., slip and fall)
  • Poor lifting technique and body mechanics

Why Seeing a Sports Chiropractor can Improve Your Shoulder Pain

A sports chiropractor uses services which work with your body's ability to self-heal. Following an initial physical exam and history, Dr. Earle and his team can diagnose your condition and implement a customized plan of care to address symptoms and causes. Our services may include:

  • Spinal adjustments to improve the shoulder/spine connection ("scapulo-thoracic rhythm") and trigger the release of natural pain relievers
  • Therapeutic exercises to restore healthy mobility and sufficient stability in the muscles and tendons supporting the shoulder
  • Soft tissue management to stimulate local blood flow, lymphatic drainage, and decrease reflexive tissue tension
  • Lifestyle counseling, ergonomic modifications, and sports-specific training to learn how to avoid movements and postures which are contributing to your symptoms

I always recommend Dr. Earle when people ask me where I go for my back care! No pressure or need to pre pay for months in advance. I just come when I need to and also get my wonderful massages from Krys! Love to feel papered and actually take care of myself once in a while:) Fantastic staff, all around!
